What the Reading Environment Should Not Be.

Behind every classroom door lies a diversity of students, with multiple needs, interest and learning styles. Due to this assumption the reading classroom should not just cater for one type of learner but should ensure that the needs of all are met. The Ideal Reading environment should have a genre of literature that suits and meet every one's interest and needs. This scene should also have games, technological resources, research centers, writing centers, , audio tapes and centres, fluency cards; a role play corner that includes experiences with puppetry, charades and other games that will motivate students to learn. Do not forget that the environment should be print rich but not over done. As budding reading specialist we need to collaborate and consult inorder to ensure that we have a picturesque setting that appeal to to the learners of the twenty first century.

  1. I could hear some teachers saying that you are describing a classroom utopia. "My classroom too small." "I don't have any time for all that.I have too much work to do." "Our school does not have the money. I don't have any money either." However, if we want to inspire our students to do their utmost we must invest in them and make the sacrifice to create a stimulating environment catering to the diverse learning styles.

I could recall an incident which has forced me to consider the way a Remedial classroom environment is organized. After assisting a teacher in displaying the available commercial charts, a female adolescent entered, remarking almost scornfully,"Miss, how the classroom looking babyish, so?" It is time that educators design charts which, even if they deal with the 'babyish' alphabet and blends etc. they appeal to the adolescent population. In addition, let us remember that, as much as possible, the students themselves should create much of the material to be displayed.

  2. Way to go. Continue to do what you do to the best of your ability and i sure you that the synergy would be caught on and modeled by you colleagues. I am particularly proud of the statement you made about educators or more so stakeholders making an investment in the nation charges. I see this statement as very critical to the maintenance and sustainability of our country's human resources. I feel your passion and believe that if all teachers share our perspectives on education we will raise the educational bar of all underachievers.
